From our lanai

The Makawelin

Makawelin - sounds like a good single malt scotch whiskey!

Makaweli is a town on the south shore of the island of Kauai in the State of Hawaii.   Makaweli is also the name of a street in Honolulu named after Makaweli town.

We added an "n" to Makaweli  to create Makawelin

The Plumeria

The plumeria tree in our stone garden has a certain bonsai-like aura.

The petals of the blossoms randomly mix light red, pink and white.

Our plumeria is widely known and thought to have spiritual powers.  From time to time neighbors and, occasionally, even total strangers will ask to take some blossoms for their personal memorial ceremonies.   Sometimes cars will drive up and the occupants will sit and gaze at the plumeria.

The Banana Tree

A few years ago we planted what
we thought was a dwarf banana plant.  Our banana plant has grown much larger than we expected.

After reaching full growth our banana
tree has been producing two or three
stalks of bananas each year.

Each stalk takes six to
seven months to mature
and yields sixty to eighty
bananas.

Our banana plant is the apple banana variety.  The fruit has a slightly apple-like scent.

Apple bananas are sweet, short and fat, have a slight tang to them, and stay firm  longer than other bananas.
